Why are more people being diagnosed with chronic diseases than ever before? Nearly 1 in 3 Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Almost 1 in 6 Americans have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Alzheimer’s Disease is the 6th leading cause of death.
These facts are scary and incomprehensible. What has happened to us that we have lost control of our health? Where did we get off track? How is it that we run to a doctor to heal our ills and have not been able to make the connection that how we live our lives constitutes our health? When will we truly acknowledge that what we eat and how we handle our stress has a huge impact on our lives?
Many of us have heard the stories about when Human Beings lived and worked on the land. We got up with the sun, and we slept when it went down. We ate food that was grown in good nourishing soil without pesticides. We drank clean water that didn’t have to have chemicals in it that we need to protect us from what is unhealthy now in our water resources. That was the normal rhythm of life and we were in sync with our circadian rhythm.
OK, let’s say we are beginning to understand all of this. We have recognized how we have gotten off track. What can we do?
The first step to change is awareness.
- Pay attention to what you are putting in your body. How does it feel after you eat something? Can you make a connection between eating a particular food and perhaps having indigestion several hours later or a headache the next day? How often do you check in with your body and pay attention to the response?
- Pay attention to how you are feeling emotionally. Stop every so often and ask yourself what you are feeling? Are you anxious, depressed? Are you worrying about an upcoming meeting? Are you scared that your relationship is in trouble? Are you scared about your health? Are you easily irritated? Do you get frustrated easily? Do you have road rage?
- Do you distract yourself with work or other things so that you don’t have to feel or deal with what does not feel right?
Asking yourself these types of question can significantly raise your level of awareness.
Even if this is ALL you do, you will have made a significant change in how you view yourself and your world.
